Preserving Cultural Heritage in the Digital Age: Unarchived Initiative by Chinese Canadian Museum Sets New Standard

Chinese Canadian Museum is pleased to announce the launch of the Unarchived Initiative, a ground-breaking initiative to digitize and preserve cultural heritage for future generations in a world where technology is quickly transforming how we interact with history.

Overview: The Chinese Canadian Museum is a cultural organization devoted to conserving, honouring, and disseminating the rich legacy and contributions of Chinese Canadians. The museum seeks to advance respect and understanding of other cultures via stimulating displays, instructive activities, and community outreach.

Mission: Through exhibitions, educational programs, and community involvement projects, the Chinese Canadian Museum is proud to preserve, promote, and share Chinese Canadian history, heritage, and contribution to other communities

Location: The Chinese Canadian Museum is located in Chinatown in both Vancouver and Victoria, British Columbia. There are two addresses:

  • Wing Sang Building, Vancouver’s Chinatown

Founding Year: In 2020, the museum was established to provide a venue for the celebration and preservation of Chinese Canadian history.

Key features:

  • Archives and collections: The museum is home to an extensive collection of artifacts, images, records, and oral histories on the experience of Chinese Canadians. These resources are invaluable for scholars and researchers working in the field.
  • Informative programs: The museum provides visitors of all ages with educational opportunities to learn about the experiences and contributions of Chinese Canadians with workshops, lectures, and guided tours.
  • Community engagement: The museum actively promotes a sense of pride and belonging among the Chinese Canadian population by partnering with them, hosting events, and carrying out outreach programs.
  • Exhibitions: A changing roster of exhibitions that cover a range of topics related to Chinese Canadian history and culture, such as immigration, community life, the arts, and more, is on display at the museum.

Current exhibitions:

  • The Paper Trail to the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act: This exhibition is opened to commemorate 100 years since the passing of the 1923 Chinese Exclusion Act in Canada.
  • Odysseys and Migration: This exhibition recounts some of the unique journeys that are in Chinese Canadian history from the 18th century to the present.
  • First Steps: Chinese Canadian Journeys in Victoria + Gold Mountain Dream!: This is a new temporary exhibition that highlights important starting points for Chinese Canadians in Victoria.

  • Lunar New Year Celebration: Come celebrate the Lunar New Year with us! We’ll have wonderful food, traditional crafts, and cultural performances.
  • Panel Discussion: Prominent academics and civic leaders will participate in this stimulating conversation about the nuances of Chinese Canadian identity
